By Roxanne Cruz

Artist are known to use the material of their choice and create their niche in the field. While some are content with the use of paint and other drawing materials, others are bolder with glasses. It is quite intriguing how the process is done and through which fashion the glass pipes are manipulated, and this is a simple look into the creative process.

This craft has existed for a long time now and history has seen the developments through the years. Artists of the present look pack to past disciplines because this is where they draw their inspiration from. They fuse this with the newer technology that has emerged through years of research and improvement.

Looking at different types of glasses is quite an enchanting experience, but just as they are beautiful, they are also very vulnerable. This is what makes it a rather interesting material for artists because they are challenged to make something beautiful out of the possibility of wreckage. The duality of traits is in a sense the motivating factor that governs every appreciation towards it.

There are many techniques involved when manipulating glasses. If you take time to observe the works of art you have at home or in stores, you can observe that there is a different look and feel for the varying types. To know more about them, here are some of the known techniques that are popular among makers.

One of the most known types is the blowing process which requires the use of soda lime and sand combined. With the addition of the coloring agents, the raw material has to be prepared, melted and then shaped through the use of specials and an awareness of each step in the process. Once done, this should be followed by the cooling so that the material will return to its most solid state.

Happy accidents are welcome in art because some masterpieces have come out of it. However, there is also a difference in being mindful about the limitations. Know when the best time is to take out the material after the cooling so that it does not break once you remove it, or know when not to take it out too late for there are other repercussions.

Aside from the cooling method, there is also the hot sculpting process that does not need the blowing. What is only similar with these two is that you also need tools and gears to make your special creation. However, it is also worth mentioning that this phase is mostly used for when you are creating large scale products instead.

Throughout the decades, many known and underrated artists have emerged to influence the craft. Then again, it is important to look back to the masters who have existed when this interest wast just starting out. With the lack of proper technology and inspiration to emulate, they have successfully made their creations through gut feel and a good understanding of the process despite the lack of knowledge.

If you are interested to master the techniques that have existed since time immemorial, remember that it is no easy feat. The amount of dedication and commitment that you have to pour out to the activity must be driven by inspiration and the want to create something from scratch. Glass pipes are tricky and can also make you vulnerable, but with a proper regard of the process, who knows this would lead to happy accidents, and then, near perfection.
