By Ben Kingsley

Marriage is the result of two people in untied in love and this is documented in the form of a marriage certificate. GA marriage records or marriage certificates issued in Georgia are open to the public which means that the local residents are allowed to access and request it whenever it is necessary. The implementation of the Freedom of Information Act has made this possible.

A marriage certificate is an important document that the people of Georgia use on a regular basis. Marriage records are one of the vital documents used when updating the genealogy. Some transactions in the government would call for a copy of a marriage license in order to proceed with any request. Checking on the marital status of an individual is also another use of such document. This is mostly done by people who want to make sure that they are dating someone who is unattached.

It basically contains details about the marriage of a couple. This includes the complete names of the bride and the groom. Their personal details such as the date and place of birth are also included on the certificate. It would not be a complete document without the date and the place of the marriage. One would also find the names of the couple's parents and the witnesses.

The certificates of marriages that took place before June 9, 1952 are only available at the county where it occurred. Fees may vary depending on the county it is being requested. If marriage records that were registered after the said date are requested, the state office can help you retrieve it. One has to prepare $10 in order to get a copy of the said document. An additional $5 has to be made for requesting additional copies. It is important to provide the necessary requirements and information during the application process. The one who requested for the record should also indicate their contact details along with their reason for obtaining the document and their relationship to the person on the file since the document is only released to the couple and their immediate family.

Requests can be done by going to the office of the Department of Public Health directly or by sending a mail order. When doing the mail option, all of the requirements have to be included including the payment. The state office accepts payments for mail request in the form of check or money order only, mailed-in cash are not accepted. One is expected to wait for days when doing the mail order; days can be shortened to hours if the request was done personally at the office. Fortunately, the document can now be obtained in just seconds with the help of the Internet.

The Internet has made the retrieval of records of marriage easier and convenient. There is no need to go anywhere and wait for several days since it can be requested even at the comforts of your own home. After doing a few clicks the requested file is then displayed on the monitor. It is even available 24/7, so the request can be made anytime at your own convenience.
