A Broad Perspective Of American Political Commentary

By Essie Osborn

The US is very instrumental through the way it impacts political decisions the world over. Its aim as a super power is to ensure that peace and tranquility prevails in all political situations. It is thus quite unfortunate for some nations to fault such positive interventions. In a shoddy american political commentary, they are always quick to cry foul that others are meddling in their private affairs. It is however a good gesture for the United States to stay put and for it to continue giving directions where necessary.

On first March, President Barack Obama made a phone call to the Russian president Vladimir Putin. In a conversation that lasted ninety minutes, the two heads of states deliberated on the international tension over Ukraine. They seemed not to be in agreement over the matter. While Obama felt that Russia was violating the sovereignty of Ukraine, his counterpart did not see any fault with the ongoing operation. The Russian forces had violated territorial violations by spreading to Crimea, a Ukrainian territory.

The major controversial issue was for Russia to withdraw from the boundaries of Ukraine. To further push them to the wall, the White house declared possible non cooperation with Russia in other issues of international concern. To begin with, America threatened not to participate in the Group of Eight Summit in Sochi, Russia. Such a move would make the meeting scheduled for June unsuccessful.

The commitment of America to this just course cannot be overlooked. She has traversed the boundaries, even reaching out to Africa, where she has discarded non humanitarian policies. A case in point is Uganda where an anti gay declaration met protest and possible economic sanctions from the west. As a result, they will have to re-look into the matter

During his highly publicized visit to Africa, Obama refused to pass through Kenya. Even though this is believed to be his original homeland, he was not ready to cooperate with a country that was marred with corruption and impunity. To some extent, that decision forced Kenya to change her International Cooperation policies. It finally downed on them that the fight against corruption had to be taken more seriously.

Though it is not a signatory of The Rome Statute, America has been at the forefront in calling for cooperation with the international criminal court at The Hague in Netherlands. When the Kenyan leaders showed a sign of non cooperation, the international community made it clear that they had no choice but to comply with the dictates of international law. The strides that are being made towards international consciousness and coexistence have to be tampered with justice and accountability.

The positives aside, the American government sometimes goes overboard in its affirmative action techniques. At times they pull the strings too tight until they appear bullish. In such circumstances, the target governments normally rebel and resort to counter attack. Such in-tolerances should be ignored at all cost. One way to bring peace is by allowing people to have their way at times.

America is thus at crossroads when it comes to management of world politics. Whereas their participation is always expected, when they do, someone has to come out and point an accusing finger at them. They therefore need to accept to take actions even amidst displeasure from other parties.
