How An Egalitarian Church Works

By Annabelle Holman

Gender is one key determinant of what one can and cannot do, hence, the discrimination. And more often than not, women receive this end of the bargain. Males are typically egoistic and the thought of a female stepping over the line of her society constructed roles is plain unacceptable.

This idea can be traced way back into The Creation where they were created first and that Eve was made because God saw that Adam was lonely. This is the guiding principle in most churches where only males exercise full leadership. However, females can find solace in an egalitarian church in Denver.

Men and women is equal, this is the guiding principle of an egalitarian church. It shows just that by giving people equal chances to hold important positions in the church. By doing so, it recognizes both the capabilities of males and females to lead and enlighten people.

Therefore, these churches choose their leaders based on their ability to lead people, not because of their gender. Because they believe that all people are equal before God, there should never be limitations as to what each can do in the church, in the home and in the society. As long as one can do it, then he or she may do it without limits.

If one cannot do what he is asked to do, there will be others who can. If a man cannot do this, then maybe a woman can. There are just some areas that women do better in and men should learn to respect that not everything can be done with their muscles.

Taking advantage of what both genders can contribute is how the egalitarian church strives to do. It is one way of encouraging equality in that both are given equal rights to do what they are gifted to do. If there are areas where men do better, there are also areas where women do best. If men will do the building, women can certainly do the designing.

However, many critics say that egalitarians fail to understand the distinction between roles and equality. Though both are equal, each has different roles to keep. For instance, in a family, the husband keeps the role of providing for his family while the wife carries the responsibility of child bearing. Neither is superior because each only fulfills what God designed them for.

In family matters, authority is usually bestowed upon males. However, wives should not just keep silent and do whatever her husband tells her to do. It would be best to air out your opinions and do the decision making together, weighing carefully the pros and cons. When you do it together, you live a more harmonious life.

Men do not solely run the world and women are not merely a cheerleader anymore. These days, both are equally trained to play the game alongside each other for they were created to complement and benefit one another.
