Characteristics Of Members In A Church Building Committee

By Patty Goff

Erecting church structures is important for every ministry that wants to grow. The kind of structure you raise and the time it takes depends on the church building committee. The building committee must be composed of honorable members if the building project must progress. Some of the qualities they should possess include honesty, integrity, love, understanding and persuasiveness.

It is impossible to allow a team handle thousands of dollars if there is anyone of them in their midst who cannot be trusted. If they are honest, you can willingly send them out to represent you before highly placed citizens for financial support without thinking they may hide some of the money. The team must not find it difficult to say the truth at all times.

A person who has integrity will shun wrong ways of getting things. For example, he will shun obtaining money through dubious means such as gambling and stealing. Integrity means steadfast adherence to godly nature.

If a team member loves God, he or she won't even mind doing most of the work alone. This is a good virtue that will help the church at large especially where the others are indisposed to work. A loving person will not be angry with someone in the congregation who truly has nothing to pay for the project.

The people should be able to persuade others. Sometimes, it is difficult to get money from the congregation but a little talk on the right topic can stir up their minds. Since it is a godly thing, people should give willingly and this is possible with persuasion.

Understanding is a gift each person in the group should have. Even if all but one person does not make a contribution all year, they should be patient to understand the reason, especially when it is genuine. This will help such a person remain firm in the faith and prevent gossiping and disunity. A group with understanding of the times and seasons also knows when to plan special programs that can be used to fetch huge amounts.

Anybody who is called to join the force for erecting the structure must also be sacrificial. This means he or she must be willing to let go certain things such as comfort, time and even money. When targets are not realized after fund raising, it becomes the responsibility of the members to seek extra measures of making it up. This may boil down to making individual contributions. Sometimes, this action may be done more than twice in a month, depending on how the need arises.

It is not bad to include some professionals in the team. People from different walks of lives such as civil engineers, architects, electrical engineers, lawyers, surveyors and so on should be welcome. Each of them plays specific roles to facilitate the work. For instance, while the architect develops the building plan, the lawyer ensures that everything that is done is within the government's directives.
