Is There A Purpose In Life, One Wonders

By Leslie Ball

As a human being, it is inevitable that one would ponder over their very existence. Often, this pondering and musing takes the shape of a serious dilemma. It could be so deep and serious that it could rob one of their peace of mind and give sleepless nights. Searching the answers to questions such as is there a purpose in life, becomes essential to proceed living.

Many seek solutions in the religious, spiritual or scientific path they choose to follow. Goals are set by the practices of their following. Lifestyles are assumed on this basis too. And more than anything else, the answers to deep questions can often be found in the theories and beliefs of this chosen path.

Some people live their lives according to the teachings of spiritual or religious leaders, who they call gurus. Their outlook to life and the way of living it is all governed by the belief system set by that religion or spiritual path. Their sense of meaning in this world is achieved by fulfilling what this cause demands of them.

If one believes in a certain scientific theory or system, it can lead to the providing of answers too. Most of the methods adopted in life will be found to be in accordance with this belief, and the person will tend to seek solutions to daily dilemmas also within this belief system

However, there are many in this world who are not fortunate enough to have a belief or system that presides over their life, and that can be the provider of their worldly queries. Many wander in angst searching answers they may or may never find through their entire lives. The real question that arises is whether these people actually find or are worthy of a purpose in life. Simply not to follow a path can certainly not disqualify a human being from living a meaningful life.

Many such people go on without either caring much about having no purpose, or simply not giving it much weight and value. However, many others get lost in these very musings and in turn, get caught in a web of distress and misery. They may go to such extremes with such thoughts that their very existence may become questionable to them.

This is the time to stop and ask yourself if there is any point in creating such a predicament for yourself. Living with such doubts and miserable thoughts is actually what weighs one don, rather than the misery itself. So, better sense lies in seeking the answers within oneself, and finding the path by looking inward.

To explain this, let us take the example of a musician, or architect, if you please, who neither believes in any religion nor societal pattern. Now this person may choose to make educating street children his mission in life. His purpose in life may be to provide literacy to those not as privileged as him.

Another case such as the above may be that of a botany lover, who may not be a professional, but a visionary in her own way. She may devote her time and mind to research on certain types of plants that the others may deem worthy of little thought. This could be the purpose of her existence.

So we see that finding purpose in life is not something that comes from external force. Nor does it get created automatically. Purpose has to be worked upon, it has to be found within.
