Looking Into Disability Hate Speech

By Daphne Bowen

Speech that is offensive or insulting to individuals because of characteristics such as color, national origin, sex, race, disability or other features is identified as hate speech. On the other hand disability hate speech is defined as that which discriminates people who are incapacitated. Individuals with inabilities in some way have a way of passing information to others members though they get discriminated by the members from the able society.

The crime related to skin color and religious affiliations have been on decline, but the hate against the disabled has been hard to wipe out. This is because the only person who can detect hate is the victim who in this case is the disabled. Disability can be observed at a glance unlike religion and political views. This tagging on disabled individuals lays a lot of focus on their negativity and stains their strengths. This creates a bold line of separation between the two divides.

Those who propagate hatred enjoy their freedom since the law enforcement bodies are reluctant in administering justice to the victims. They get demoralized and hence they develop an attitude that the society neglects the under privileged whenever a case involving them is reported. The continuous negligence of their rights makes them apologetic of the condition they are in.

This has led to the establishment of organizations that advocate for equality and ensure that all people living with disabilities and special needs are represented fairly and accurately in government offices, news, entertainment, social media and other platforms. Any company government or private should be restricted to consider the disabled in the recruitment of their employees. This will cement the relationship between all people in society.

Wiping out the stereotypes in the society about the disabled is the key mission of such organizations.one of the sensitive areas is language, this is what enables the recipient of the message to judge if the message has some elements of hatred directed to people with disabilities. Every individual is entitled to freedom of expression as long as his/her address does not violate other people rights. A balance that reserves the rights of every person should be arrived at to ensure the rights of individuals are safeguarded whenever there is conflict.

The minority groups have become classified by negative properties that are harmful to them. The address may inflict a direct pain either physically or emotionally, hence use of such expressions repetitively escalates to a feeling of inferiority by this minority groups in the community. They may be affected mentally in some way that might be irreversible.

Today many countries have committed themselves to end this hate speech by coming up with ways to control the vice. Societies have been created in schools with open membership regardless of his/her physical appearance, language or culture. This gives hope to them that even their views can be taken.

Vacancies in the top government offices are kept for the disabled individuals to allow them to air their views and contribute to nation building especially when their ideas are absorbed. Guiding and counseling centers are related to offer counseling to traumatized members . Many anti-hate speech institutions have been put in place handle the reported cases. Any statement that can provoke the public should be discarded before it reaches the recipients table.
