The Identity House And LGBTQ Counseling NY

By James Jones

When individuals need advice and support, it can often be difficult to know where to turn. Whereas, individuals living an alternative lifestyle often have an even more difficult time finding assistance. As such, it is great the Identity House offers LGBTQ Counseling NY.

While the community has come a long with regards to obtaining rights, recent trends to remove those rights have many on edge. For example, the recent change in allowing transgendered individuals in the military has rebirthed a new form of discrimination. As such, there are now more people in need of counseling services than ever before.

Identity house offers individuals of all orientations a safe place to hold conversations and discussions related to LGBTQ issues. In most cases, a staff or volunteer member is available to assist those in need at least a few nights a week on a walk-in basis. Whereas, those in need of long-term counseling can schedule appointments at a time that is convenient and most often a counselor will make oneself available at that time.

While counseling is offered on a walk in basis, there are also groups which focus on issues related to gender and orientation that meet on a monthly or semi-monthly basis. Anyone in the community or advocates of those in the community are welcome at the center. For, when at the center, when people talk, the counselors listen.

Once a counselor has listened to an individual, the counselor may refer the individual to a professional, or recommend that one attend short-term counseling or become part of an active support group. In most cases, these recommendations are offered free of charge. As such, anyone in the community can often help and guidance at Identity House.

As volunteers often track issues related to the LGBTQ community in the news, the center tends to offer support groups related to gender, orientation and health issues throughout the course of the year. In addition, there are often themed groups related to specific issues related to various groups under the LGBTQ umbrella.

Most people have heard of Coming Out day in the LGBTQ community. Coming Out day is a day in which those in the community ask others to come out and take a stand for equal rights. While this is the case, there are always those whom must remain closeted for one reason or another. As such, it is important that members of the community understand and do not out other people without permission.

While support groups meet on a regular basis, there area also events and workshops held throughout the year. While most of the workshops are based on lifestyle, there are others which relate to Aids awareness, research and other medical issues which effect the community.
