Support For LGBT Monterey County

By Laura Wood

Children and teens will sometimes come to a point where they question their sexuality. They may be confused about the fact their feelings are different to that of their peers. It is especially difficult to cope with this at this age because there is stress coming from school, from the home environment and from social gatherings. LGBT Monterey County is a subject that parents needs to be aware of.

Beginning to tell people your decisions and choices regarding sexuality and gender can be a big step forward. It is never easy to know how to go about this. Some people feel that they are going to disappoint their loved ones. They are anxious about this, yet they don't want to run around feeling that they are being dishonest.

The worst thing that you can do is to force yourself to believe that you are attracted to someone of another gender when you don't feel that way. Of course, there are individuals who don't have these thoughts or feelings until much later on. During the initial years, one is drawn to people who are of the opposite sex.

There will obviously be challenges as you go through life. You will be exposed to people who can bully you, especially in school. However, as you enter the mature years of college and the workplace, you will find that this becomes less of a problem to have to deal with. There is a counselor on the college campus who you can talk to, should you find that things are getting tense.

They feel that they have done their part and raised you so you will make the best choices. Parents, especially will blame themselves, even though they will feign happiness. It is a process which one needs to go through and often counseling is required. There are specialized counselors who deal with these types of subjects.

A little boy may want to go to preschool in his mom's dress, for example. Of course, one needs to explain that from such a young age, this is not the best way forward. However, it is never a good idea to stop the child from exploring. They are not to be labeled bad because they feel different from another child. Some boys are more feminine when they are young.

Girls can be tomboys. It doesn't mean that they purposefully act like another gender. However, when a little girl refuses to wear dresses, and wants to copy everything her big brother does, one may have to look into this. Of course, one needs to decide as an individual later on whether you are going to continue with life as the sex you have been assigned or whether you are going to become more open to this.

These days, people know a lot more about LGBT. Parents are more accepting of the situation. They may only be upset because they know what the individual is up against. This will include bullying, discrimination, being up against hard times. Of course, one wants to protect their children. It is natural, but you have to set them free and this is the only way in which they can be happy.
