Is There Life After Death Takes Place?

By Jordan Schmidt

Scientists have attempted to find the answers on the question of death in many places and as one may guess, the results have been disappointing. Is there life after death? This is definitely not the easiest of questions to answer. In one scientific study, patients that had suffered what are considered fatal heart attacks were for considered for a study. All the patients that had successfully undergone resuscitation were interviewed. The patients gave their accounts of what they had experienced or seen during their brief period of time of death.

Responding to the question of what had transpired when they were dead, a significant number of the patients said that they saw the events that took place as resuscitation efforts were underway. Another group said that the period was that of bliss and they felt free. There were accounts that mentioned the presence of a bright light. Violence and discomfort were described by yet another group.

The biggest challenge with this kind of experiment is the fact that it is greatly subjective. Many of the accounts that were described may have been greatly influenced by beliefs held from the past. Seeing a bright light may simply mean that you have always believed that the afterlife is associated with such a phenomenon. The same can be said of those that reported discomfort.

Many different religious beliefs related to dying and its aftermath exist. It is generally believed that there is another existencr after we die. The promise of an afterlife is perhaps the biggest determinant of membership to religion. There are many contrasts as well as similarities among all the religions that believe in the presence of life after death.

The common denominator in many faiths is the existence of a higher power, God, who is the giver and taker of life. Any death that takes place, it is believed, is according to the plan of the higher power. Once the physical body dies, the soul is released to the creator. It is the soul that moves on onto the afterlife. Many believe that all living things have a soul of their own that exists for eternity.

In Christianity and Islam there is strong belief in the existence of eternal life which follows judgment. Judgement will take place at the end of times and every person will be given an opportunity to give an account of their deeds. Those that led righteous lives on earth are rewarded with an eternal existence while those that were unrighteous get to spend the rest of eternity in hell.

Reincarnation is the act of moving into the afterlife in another flesh. This belief is widespread among communities in Asia such as Buddhism and Hinduism. Among the Hindu, it is believed that when we die, our souls take up other bodies and we continue living. The cycle goes on and on. In Buddhists, however, do not believe in the soul. Rather, the perpetuation is said to be carried out by what is known as the stream of consciousness.

In spite of extensive research, death has remained a mystery. The most frustrating thing is that the dead have remained dead as far as we know and they never contribute to such discussions. May be the only time to find out is when our turn comes.
